What Is the Companion Pass?


The Companion Pass allows you to bring one person with you 
for free, excluding taxes and fees ($5.60 each way in the U.S.).

  • You can change your companion up to three times a year.

  • It works on flights booked with cash, points, or credits.

  • Once you qualify, the pass is valid for the remainder of that year and the entire following year.

For my family of four, it’s the best perk out there. When my husband and I both hold Companion Passes, our kids fly free. Or he and I can take trips without the kids and only need to buy one flight! We’ve saved thousands this way (both in points and cash).

Current Promo

There is more than one way to earn a Companion Pass. There is the traditional way, where you are required to earn 135,000 Rapid Rewards points in a calendar year. Southwest also offers a promotional Companion Pass, where you can earn CP with just one card and one signup bonus. With each of the 3 personal cards, you must hit the minimum spend, and then you earn CP through February 28, 2027! Each card has different annual fees and promotional points earned. Read through each card's benefits to determine the card that is best for you!

  • Southwest Rapid Rewards Plus 
    • Spend $3,000 in the first 3 months from account opening
    • Earn 20,000 points and a CP
    • $99 annual fee
  • Southwest Rapid Rewards Premier 
    • Spend $4,000 in the first 3 months from account opening
    • Earn 30,000 points and a CP
    • $149 annual fee
  • Southwest Rapid Rewards Priority
    • Spend $5,000 in the first 3 months from account opening
    • Earn 40,000 points and a CP
    • $229 annual fee

Is This a Good Offer for You?

This offer isn't for everyone, but there are many who will find it appealing. If you would like to earn the CP quickly for an upcoming trip in 2026, this is a great opportunity to fast-track that Companion Pass! You can also open a business card later in the year in an effort to 'extend' your CP through December 31, 2027!  I think this move is highly underrated in the points and miles community. Here is how it works:

  1. Open one of the personal cards now and earn CP quickly
  2. Open a business card sometime in 2026 and hit the minimum spend. The standard offer on the Performance business card is 80k points. 
Example: Priority personal card 40k points + Performance Biz 80k + 10k annual CP boost = 130k points earned just through bonus points in 2026. When you add the points earned from your minimum spend, you are over the 135k points needed to earn CP through the end of 2027. 

*Remember, you are eligible to earn a signup bonus on SW personal credit cards once every 24 months.
